A mobile payments solution for the underbanked in the Caribbean and US

DIGICEL

Digicel is the most popular mobile service provider in the Caribbean. Many Digicel customers were either underserved by their bank or unable to open a traditional bank account due to being casual labour. Digicel identified an opportunity to create a mobile payments service and pre-paid Mastercard for these customers to allow them to pay bills, transfer money to contacts and shop online from their phone. Andrew's experience at Visa and Mastercard led to him being made lead UX Designer on this project.

Working with Digicel staff he held brand workshops to establish a product name and look and feel that would resonate in both the Caribbean and in the US and satisfy the requirements of partner banks and banking regulations in both territories.

With developers in the US, Caribbean and Europe he designed an iOS and Android mobile app. Created to be habit-forming and intuitive, front of mind for customers when making payments and reduce the need for queuing at banks to pay bills. Andrew also designed a marketing portal and campaign to raise awareness of the new service. In the 90 days following launch there were 12,700 applications for the pre paid Mastercard in the Caribbean.
